Malibu will pay $1 million to settle a lawsuit filed by two environmental groups over storm water discharge.

The lawsuit was filed in response to chronic bacteriological contamination of Malibu Lagoon and Surfrider Beach.

Under the settlement, Malibu will pay $750,000 to the Natural Resources Defense Council and Santa Monica Baykeeper. It will also allocate $250,000 for the city's Ocean Health Water Assessment Project.

Since the lawsuit was filed, the city has opened several new storm water treatment facilities.
