LA Superior Court to close 56 courtrooms, lay off workers due to budget

LOS ANGELES

The $30 million budget slashing will lay off 100 non-courtroom workers and force some judges to share courtroom staff.

Court reporters will no longer be provided for civil cases, forcing litigants to hire their own stenographers if they want to preserve the court record.

The caseloads of the courtrooms that are being shut down will be distributed to the remaining courtrooms. The cutbacks are expected to take place by June 30.

The cutbacks are part of $650 million statewide that were mandated under the California budget and came in addition to $70 million in reductions made earlier in Los Angeles County.
