Long Beach police shoot gunman near gas station

LONG BEACH, Calif.

Authorities said the suspect shot a man on a bicycle at a gas station near the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Pacific Avenue just after midnight. When officers arrived at the scene, the suspect shot at their patrol car.

"As one officer was preparing to stop his car, the suspect turned around and fired on the patrol car and hit the windshield and the hood with the officer still inside the vehicle," said Lisa Massacani, spokeswoman for the Long Beach Police Department.

Officers shot the suspect, a man in his 60s, and took him into custody. He was hospitalized in critical condition. No officers were injured.

The bicyclist, a man in his 30s, later died at a nearby hospital. The motive for the initial shooting has not been determined. Police are looking at surveillance tapes from the area.

Westbound lanes of Pacific Coast Highway were temporarily closed as authorities investigated the shooting.
