The Simi Valley Police Department issued a news release Thursday warning city residents of a recent string of garage burglaries thought to be crimes of opportunity.

Police said there has been an increase in reports of stolen property from garages left open during afternoon and evening hours in the city. Vehicles inside the garages have also been burglarized.

The news release reminds city residents to lock exterior and interior garage doors when unattended. With temperatures heating up, residents are also advised to keep residential doors and windows closed and locked when going to bed for the night.

Police also offered reminders if residents plan to be away from their homes for any extended period of time, including suspending mail and newspaper delivery service, leaving lights or radios on with timers and ensuring ladders or other tools burglars could used to gain entry.
