Space shuttle Enterprise arrives in New York City

April 27, 2012 12:00:00 AM PDT
Space shuttle Enterprise arrived in New York City Friday morning, riding on top of a modified jumbo jet.

The shuttle took off from Dulles International Airport outside Washington, D.C. Its trip included flyovers above parts of the city.

After its fly-around, the Enterprise was set to go to Kennedy Airport, where it will stay for a few weeks. The shuttle's new permanent home will eventually be at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum on Manhattan's west side.

Enterprise was never used in an actual space mission, but was a full-scale test vehicle used for flights in the atmosphere and experiments on the ground. It comes to New York as part of NASA's process of wrapping up the shuttle program, which ended last summer.
