The friends and family of a man, who died trying to protect his daughter from being hit by a car, rallied outside the girl's school on Friday.

They're concerned about the safety near Ritter Elementary School. Seven-year-old Anjelica Arreola and her father Jose Arreola were walking along a crosswalk near the school last Friday when they were struck by an SUV.

Jose Arreola was declared dead at the scene. Anjelica remains in a coma at Long Beach Memorial Hospital. Her mother, who saw the entire incident from a few steps behind, said her husband saw the car speeding toward them and tried to save his daughter's life. He will be laid to rest Saturday.

Investigators are still looking for the suspected hit-and-run driver. He is described as a heavy-set Hispanic male with short hair and a goatee. He was driving a pearl white Cadillac Escalade that sustained damage to the right-front fender and grill.

Anyone with information that could help investigators is urged to call Los Angeles County CHP at (323) 259-2010.
