Temecula kids made up story of being lured by man with candy

TEMECULA, Calif.

The kids claimed a man with candy approached them near the 29600 block of Nightcrest Circle and tried to get them to get into his vehicle. They said they then ran and told their parents.

They also told deputies the suspect had black spiky hair, wore a black jacket, had tattoos on his arms and legs and drove a red SUV or van with flames on the front fenders. Their description prompted a search by sheriff's helicopter crew.

One of the children's parents told deputies Sunday night that the story was made up. Officers have questioned the parents and children but still did not know why they did it.
