'June' the whale freed from last of tracking buoys

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif.

Rescuers from the Pacific Marine Mammal Center tried to help the whale 2 1/2 weeks ago off San Onofre. They struggled to remove 120 feet of fishing line from the forty foot gray whale. They cut away most of it, then lost track of the whale that night.

It was spotted off Monterey County 1 1/2 weeks ago. Then, the crew of a fishing boat from the Spud Point Crab Company recently found the whale off Bodega Bay and removed the last bit of debris and tracking buoys.

They say the whale showed obvious signs of gratitude as it finally swam free.
