The uproar over the product known as "pink slime" has forced three processing plants out of business.

Beef Products Inc. says it is closing plants in Texas, Kansas and Iowa later this month. A total of 650 jobs will be lost. One plant in Nebraska will remain open.

The company says unfounded attacks over a product that it calls "lean, finely textured beef" are behind the closures.
