Beach closures lifted in Long Beach after sewage spill

LONG BEACH, Calif.

City officials had closed all beaches west of the Belmont Pier because of a 5,500-gallon spill that happened in the City of Los Angeles on Saturday. The storm drain system there flows into the Los Angeles River, which then enters the ocean in Long Beach. It was initially reported that the spill originated in South Pasadena.

Samples were collected along the entire open coastline on Monday and Tuesday, and the results showed bacteria levels at all locations are within state standards, officials said.
