Ex-Marine sentenced to 15 years in prison for killing fellow Marine

SANTA ANA, Calif.

Alvin Lovely, 24, of Dallas, Texas, pleaded guilty to one count of voluntary manslaughter for the 2008 killing of 20-year-old Stephen Serrano. Lovely also pleaded guilty to one felony count of voluntary manslaughter.

Serrano was killed in a secluded area of San Clemente on May 13, 2008. Prosecutors say Lovely and 25-year-old fellow Marine Christian Carney thought Serrano had stolen drug money from Carney's room. Serrano was shot once in the face and three times in the back. His body was discovered by a jogger two days after the murder.

Carney, who is from Manorville, N.Y., was found guilty last December of one count of murder, one count of criminal threats and one count of attempting to dissuade a witness. He was sentenced in March to 28 years and eight months in state prison.
