Authorities said the pursuit of the black Mercedes-Benz began near Broadway in South Los Angeles after 10 p.m.
The suspect got on the 110 Freeway and eventually ended up in Compton, where he drove the car erratically through residential areas. The suspect hit speed bumps and brushed up against two parked cars before colliding with the police car at Billings Street and Wadsworth Avenue.
The suspect jumped out of his car to make a getaway, but three officers wrestled the man down to the ground and took him into custody.
At least one officer involved in the collision was transported to the hospital for medical attention. The officer was seen on an ambulance gurney with a headwrap on, but the severity or extent of the officer's injuries was not known.
It was unclear why police tried to pull the suspect over. At one point during the chase, the suspect threw something out on 110 Freeway. Investigators were trying to determine what that object was.
