Car crashes into Chinatown apartment, injures girl

LOS ANGELES

Authorities say the crash happened in the 700 block of West Bartlett Street at about 6:30 a.m. The 12-year-old girl was watching TV when she fell asleep on the couch in the living room. She awoke when a Toyota Corolla slammed through the living room window.

The victim's uncle, Kim Ouk, said the girl was pinned under the car.

"I pulled her (from) under the car," he said.

Police say it could have been much worse. The young girl was taken to a local hospital with only minor cuts and burns. Police say she will make a full recovery.

The driver, 67-year-old Bavan Nguyen, was able to walk away from the accident uninjured. Nguyen said he swerved into the building to avoid hitting an oncoming car.

Ouk says this is the second time in six months that a car has hit their apartment. The first time, no one was hurt.

Police say the driver will not be charged. The building has been yellow-tagged.
