Water main break floods South LA streets

LOS ANGELES

Five to six blocks were affected. No homes were flooded, but mud and sand washed onto driveways and lawns. Some homes were left without water.

By 5 p.m., DWP officials said 50 to 60 residents were without power. It was estimated that water would be restored in the evening or at night.

Some residents said they woke up thinking all the water was the work of Mother Nature since there was a chance of rain in the forecast. Instead, it was an 8-inch water pipe from the 1930s that ruptured.

Department of Water and Power crews used magnetic sensors to track down the source of the leak. A cleanup effort was under way.
