Ex-Rutgers student Dharun Ravi due in jail Thursday

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J.

Dharun Ravi, 20, has given up his right to remain free while prosecutors appeal his 30-day sentence. Ravi appeared in court Wednesday to formalize his decision. Prosecutors say the sentence is too lenient.

Ravi's roommate, /*Tyler Clementi,*/ eventually took his own life after learning he had been secretly recorded during an intimate encounter with another male.

While prosecutors tried to appeal Ravi's sentence, the judge who issued Ravi's 30-day sentence defended his decision.

Superior Court Judge Glenn Berman said the punishment is harsh enough to deter others from doing the same thing, but not so severe that it will dump 20-year-old Dharun Ravi into prison with hardened criminals.

It is not clear if Ravi will serve the full 30 days.
