Bill for easier teacher firing moves to Assembly

SACRAMENTO, Calif.

The state Senate on Tuesday approved the bill, which comes in response to the Miramonte Elementary School scandal. Mark Berndt was arrested for allegedly blindfolding his students and spoon-feeding them his semen.

SB1530, by Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla, would allow school boards to dismiss teachers instead of leaving the decision to a disciplinary commission. It pertains to cases of violent, sexual or drug offenses involving children.

Teachers unions oppose the legislation, saying it erodes the right to due process.
