10 people injured in crash near Hemet High

HEMET, Calif.

The collision was reported at 41701 Stetson Ave. at 2:44 p.m., just after students got out of class. About 30 students were crossing the street heading to a parking lot when witnesses said a fast-moving pickup truck ran a red light and plowed into the crowd.

Emergency responders said three people were critically injured and five suffered minor injuries. Seven students were rushed to Riverside Medical Center and an adult was taken to another hospital. Two people refused treatment, including the driver. An 11th person received medical attention.

Police said the driver of the Ford Ranger, 18-year-old Daniel Carrillo, stopped immediately after hitting the pedestrians. Investigators said they don't believe drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.

It is not yet known if charges will be filed against Carillo, a junior at the school, according to the Press-Enterprise.

The cause of the crash was under investigation. Carillo's car was impounded and will be inspected for possible mechanical failure.
