The /*TSA*/ fired five workers and suspended 38 others at Southwest Florida International Airport after an internal investigation showed hundreds of passengers went through routine screening but none of them got the additional random checks.
The workers are a combination of front-line screeners and supervisors. They represent about 15 percent of approximately 280 TSA employees at the airport.
This is one of the largest disciplinary actions ever taken in the TSA's 10-year history. The workers are being given a chance to appeal, according to the TSA.
About 3.8 million passengers departed from Southwest Florida International Airport in 2011, according to the TSA.
