Los Angeles Unified School District teachers have approved a new labor agreement that requires them to take 10 unpaid days to help offset an estimated $390 million district budget deficit.

Superintendent John Deasy said the deal will prevent the layoffs of some 4,500 teachers and thousands more district workers. Class sizes will also stay the same.

For the adult school division at the University of California, Los Angeles, the deal means adult classes are no longer on the chopping block.

"This is very important to me and I know it's important for a lot of people in my age bracket," said adult educations tudent Rose Hawthorne. "Where else would we go?"
