Boyle Heights pursuit suspect slams into taco truck; 2 killed

BOYLE HEIGHTS, LOS ANGELES

The incident happened shortly before midnight Saturday. CHP officers were trying to stop a driver after she was spotted weaving in and out of traffic on the 10 Freeway near Alameda Street.

Investigators say the driver of a white truck, identified as 37-year-old Elba Jimenez, sped off and continued on to the 5 Freeway, where she took the Cesar Chavez off-ramp and crashed into a taco truck.

"We had some innocent bystanders that were at the taco truck eating. A couple of them were doing their laundry, and then walked over to get something to eat, and unfortunately they were victims of this accident," said Capt. Rick Godinez with the Los Angeles Fire Department.

There was a total of five victims, including the two fatalities. Those killed were identified by the coroner's office as 38-year-old Claudia Fernandez and 19-year-old Marlene Alatorre, both from Los Angeles. Alatorre was the mother of a year old girl.

Jimenez was booked on DUI, among other charges. She was being held on $2 million bail.
