Torrance carjacking suspect opens fire on detectives

TORRANCE, Calif.

Authorities said detectives investigating a carjacking that occurred last week went to the area of 139th and San Pedro streets at about 9 a.m. They were attempting to contact two suspects, but they fled - one on foot and another in a pickup truck.

The suspect that fled on foot was caught hiding in the neighborhood and taken into custody.

Detectives in a an unmarked Toyota minivan pursued the white pickup truck, but the suspect was able to flee the area. During the chase, police say the suspect fired shots and struck the detectives' vehicle.

No officers were injured in the incident, and no officers opened fire.

Several streets were blocked for about five hours as police looked for evidence.
