The Santa Monica Police Department is changing its approach when encountering a wild animal after the controversial killing of a mountain lion in downtown Santa Monica last month.

On Monday, the police department met with members of the Department of Fish and Game, the National Park Service and animal activists to come up with ways to deal with future animal encounters.

As a result, the police department plans to provide officers with additional training. It's also obtaining specified equipment related to wildlife capture.
