The approved budget is $6.03 billion. It closes a $390 million deficit, according to the LAUSD. A $2.7 billion deficit has been ongoing since the 2008-2009 budget. The deficit resulted mostly from state reductions in funding, according to the LAUSD.
The new budget fully funds afterschool programs and provides partial funding for early childhood and adult education, according to an LAUSD news release. More than 6,200 jobs were preserved.
LAUSD Superintendent John Deasy gave credit to district teachers for allowing salary cuts by working fewer days, reducing spending.
"This budget is only possible because of a set of shared sacrifices with our labor partners," said Superintendent John Deasy.
"These budget cuts are real, and they are deep," said Board Member Tamar Galatzan. "They affect every student, in every school in this district. But through hard work and negotiations, we have managed to shield many of LAUSD's core programs with the budget we passed today."
