San Fernando mayor, council members' recall petition certified

SAN FERNANDO, Calif.

Organizers say the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder has certified their petitions to oust Mayor Brenda Esqueda and council members Mario Hernandez and Maribel De La Torre.

They were told they have enough valid signatures to prompt a recall election challenging the three.

Recall organizers have accused the members of financial mismanagement of the city. The three were all embroiled in sex scandals, with Hernandez admitting an affair with de la Torre, and Esqueda allegedly being involved with a married police sergeant.

According to the clerk's office, organizers easily surpassed the required 2,029 signatures required.

The city council now must schedule a recall election. The vote is expected in October or November.
