Drowned baby's mother arrested for homicide in Santa Ana

SANTA ANA, Calif.

Police and medics were called to a residence by a report of a drowned baby at 518 South Sullivan in Santa Ana Friday at about 4:20 p.m.

Responding personnel found the 2-month-old baby unconscious and not breathing. Medics pronounced the baby dead at 4:33 p.m.

The baby girl was later identified as Kimberly Gutierrez, born on April 9.

During the investigation, officers determined the mother, 27-year-old Lucero Diaz Carrera, threw the baby into the Jacuzzi at the residence. Carrera had ingested a bottle of prescription medication and was showing signs of overdose. She was hospitalized.

Police proceeded with a homicide investigation.

The baby's grandmother reportedly arrived home to find the baby floating in the Jacuzzi.

Based on evidence and witness statements, Carrera was arrested on suspicion of causing the child's death, according to police. Carrera was booked on charges of homicide and of assaulting a child resulting in death.

Carrera appeared in court Tuesday and had her arraignment continued until July 20. She was held on $1 million bond.
