The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department says 26 such robberies have been reported so far this year.
Most of the victims are juveniles or young adults who are using their cellphones at bus stops or walking around the neighborhood.
Authorities are urging people to limit cellphone usage in public and be aware of their surroundings.
