Bicyclist killed in Rancho Cucamonga hit-run

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif.

Investigators said Alex Silva was riding his bicycle on Wilson Avenue west of Cherry Avenue about 11:55 p.m. when a car struck him from behind. They said the driver slowed down, but then fled southbound on Cherry Avenue.

Witnesses called 911. Silva was transported to Kaiser Hospital in Fontana, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Witnesses described the vehicle as sporty, red and possibly a convertible. Investigators said the car will likely have front-end damage on its left side, including a broken windshield and driver's side window.

Family and friends say Silva was an art student and avid cyclist. He was riding just a mile from his home when he was killed.

"It's very difficult," said Sal Silva, the victim's father. "I advise you, just turn yourself in."

Anyone with information was asked to call the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department's Rancho Cucamonga station at (909) 477-2800.
