Duarte City Council to consider declaring fiscal emergency

DUARTE, Calif.

Council members will look at two proposals Monday night. One is to declare the fiscal emergency; the other is to place a measure on the November ballot that would add up to a half-percent to the sales tax for six years. The tax could add nearly $1 million to the city's coffers each year.

Duarte is the latest city to propose a tax to help fix its budget problems. El Monte wants to tack on a soda tax for the November ballot.

Meantime, San Bernardino is moving closer toward filing for bankruptcy. The city voted to seek bankruptcy protection in early July due to a $46 million budget shortfall. San Bernardino is the third California city to file for bankruptcy this summer.
