OTRC: 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' gets earlier time slot, will compete with Leno, Letterman

Jimmy Kimmel appears on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' on Nov. 16, 2010 to promote 'National UnFriend Day'.

ABC is set to move late-night talk show "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" to 11:35 p.m. ET, the time slot currently occupied by its news program "Nightline."

The network made the announcement on Tuesday. The change is set to go into effect on Jan. 8, 2013 and will pit "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" against NBC's "Tonight Show with Jay Leno" and CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman." The next day, on January 9, "Nightline" will then begin airing at 12:35 a.m. ET and beginning on March 1, an extra hour of it will be broadcast on Fridays at 9 p.m. ET.

"Given the passionate fan base 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' has built over the past decade and the show's ratings and creative momentum this season, the time is right to make this move," Anne Sweeney, co-chair, Disney Media Networks and president, Disney/ABC Television Group, said in a statement obtained by OnTheRedCarpet.com. "There is the potential for far greater upside over the long term with this shift, given increased advertiser demand for competitive entertainment programming in the time slot."

"This shift also allows us to bookend our programming day with compelling news content," she added. "And the addition of a new primetime hour of 'Nightline' on Friday nights will ensure that the program has even more opportunities to continue its incredible, award-winning reporting."

"Jimmy Kimmel Live!" currently airs at midnight. Its host Jimmy Kimmel is also hosting the 2012 Emmy Awards in September.

"Thanks to all for the kind words re. our move to 11:35 in Jan.," he Tweeted on Tuesday. "I feel like a real life Princess..."
