According to the Los Angeles Times, a new internal study by the Los Angeles City Fire Department found dispatchers waste valuable time asking 911 callers questions before instructing them to start CPR.
The report says dispatchers have a list of mandatory questions they are required to ask. In some time-sensitive incidents, brain death can occur after about four minutes. The scripted questions take up some of that valuable time.
The report says as a result, the lifesaving procedure often begins after the point at which brain death begins.
