Fast-moving brush fire burns near Brentwood

BRENTWOOD, LOS ANGELES

The fire was first reported at 12:28 p.m. at 3000 Rustic Canyon Road. The blaze started at 5 acres and had grown to 30 acres just after 3:30 p.m. and was 10 percent contained.

As of 11 p.m., the fire was 70 percent contained.

Crews fought the blaze from the ground and the air. Two Super Scoopers from Canada attacked the fire from above, putting out any active flames. However, active hot spots in the hills were reported after the air attack as ground crews attempted to gain containment.

A resident in a nearby home said he saw the flames traveling rapidly from Rustic Canyon down a hillside near his backyard.

One Los Angeles city firefighter suffered minor burns fighting the blaze and is expected to be OK. Three other firefighters were taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion.

A group of about 100 boy scouts camping near the canyon were also given shelter during the fire. They are expected to be OK.
