Aiming to preserve its image even thirty-five years after it was built in 1923, the famous landmark honoring the world's movie capital will be stripped down to sheet metal, primed, and given a new coat of white paint.
The project, which will take around 10-weeks, begins Tuesday.
The infamous Hollywood sign was originally an advertisement to promote a real estate development called Hollywoodland Real Estate Group. The sign read "Hollywoodland" until 1949 when the last four letters were removed by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.
Several celebrities including Playboy founder Hugh Hefner also helped renovate the sign in the late 1970's by footing the bill.
Its newest renovation comes just in time for the landmark's 90th anniversary next year.
Perched high atop Mount Lee, the tallest peak in Los Angeles, the Hollywood sign offers excellent views of the Los Angeles skyline and remains the symbol of the film and television industry.
