Pomona stabbing, beating was family-related

POMONA, Calif.

The incident happened shortly before 9 a.m. Tuesday at a home on the 1800 block of West 9th Street in Pomona. Police said the suspect, identified as Nicholas Campos of Pomona, attacked 58-year-old Penny Pacheco with his fists, inflicting serious injuries to her face. The second victim, 60-year-old Gary Warthen, tried to intervene, but police say Campos stabbed him in the neck.

Both victims were airlifted to a hospital. There was no word on their conditions or their exact relationship to the suspect. Police described the incident as family-related but did not elaborate.

The suspect tried to get away but was taken into custody after being spotted nearby. The motive remains unknown.

The incident remains under investigation.
