23 schools penalized for helping cheat tests

LOS ANGELES

The schools were stripped of a key state ranking due to violations that occurred while administering standardized tests that determine in part a school's Academic Performance Index, commonly used to rank schools.

Some teachers allegedly coached students with test questions, and helped students correct errors. Some coaching was more egregious than others, according to a Department report. Other violations included not covering bulletin boards during the test sessions.

The number of California schools with violations stemming from academic test administration has been about 24 for the past three years.
