Flight Tracker: Up-to-the-minute info
In one bit of good news, officials announced that Kennedy International Airport in New York and Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey will reopen at 7 a.m. Wednesday with limited service. New York's LaGuardia Airport remains closed.
According to the flight-tracking service FlightAware, more than 7,000 flights were canceled on Tuesday alone. More than 300 flights in and out of LAX were canceled, stranding passengers and creating a backlog that may take days to sort out.
"We got in the line and they said Chicago flights are cancelled. Get in another line, said an unidentified traveler. "So here I am."
"I can't take it anymore," said another unidentified traveler. "We had to go back to the hotel yesterday and I did not sleep at all."
The United Airlines terminal at LAX was nearly empty Tuesday morning. The airline was greatly impacted because of its hubs in New York and Washington D.C.
A news crews from Thailand trying to get to New York to cover the presidential election had to change their plans.
"I tried to go to Ohio to get pretty close to New York, "said Bo Luangtong of Bangkok, Thailand. "After that, I tried to get from Ohio to New York, but we can't."
Many airlines have repositioned their planes at LAX to be ready to resume flights as soon as weather permits, but there's no telling when exactly that will happen.
"There's only one flight today from Chicago to Sweden," said Arvid Venngren of Norsjo, Sweden. "I might have to stay an extra day in Los Angeles or in Chicago, or somewhere else. Maybe they can reschedule our flights through some other European city."
The extreme weather on the East Coast has created a ripple effect.
Hotels are busy trying to accommodate the stranded travelers. Many rooms were canceled by people stuck in the East, but they were quickly filled up by travelers stranded in Los Angeles. Some of them said they were just tired of waiting around.
"We come from New Zealand. We've been traveling for 12 hours, so it's very exhausting having to find something else," said Elvira Guerra.
The Radisson said it booked 100 rooms on Sunday night alone because of flight cancelations.
