Marijuana petition approved by LA City Clerk; aims to limit medical marijuana dispensaries

LOS ANGELES

The Los Angeles City Clerk has approved a petition that would ask voters to limit medical marijuana dispensaries in the city.

Under the petition, organizers must gather more than 41,000 valid signatures by Dec. 7 to get the issue on May's general election ballot.

If the measure passes, new medical marijuana dispensaries would be prohibited. Collectives that registered with the city as of Sept. 14, 2007 would still be allowed to operate as long as they meet certain conditions.

The ordinance would also establish operating standards, including mandatory annual police background checks and distances from schools, parks and other designated places.
