El Monte's Measure H, sugary drink tax, fails

Voters on Tuesday struck down Measure H, which proposed a penny-per-ounce tax on sweetened drinks in the city of El Monte.

With 94.7 percent of precincts reporting, 76.5 percent of 13,339 voters said no and 23.5 percent said yes.

City officials had said the goal of the measure was to raise revenue and to put a tax on products that have been linked to obesity.

Business owners were opposed to the measure and argued that it would drive customers out of town.
