Huntington Beach votes against coyote-trapping proposal

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif.

The city will include information in an upcoming water bill to explain the problem and offer tips on how to prevent coyotes from encroaching on property.

The Huntington Beach City Council had considered a plan to trap and kill up to 10 coyotes after a recent string of sightings and pet deaths linked to the animals.

The mayor says there have been more than 200 coyote sightings and 26 pets killed in the last several months.

In a statement, the Humane Society of the United States said: "Trapping problem coyotes does not address the root causes of coyote conflicts and thus conflicts will continue. The best way to prevent attacks on pets is to educate residents about the importance of keeping cats inside, keeping dogs on leashes, and attending pets when outside."
