New state fire protection fees affecting Ventura County

VENTURA, Calif.

The state has begun billing Ventura County residents up to $150 for fire protection services.

Ventura County and its fire department oppose the yearly fee, saying residents living in the 'state responsibility area' are already paying for fire protection.

The area consists of state and privately owned forest, and up to 9,000 parcels in Ventura County may be subject to the fee.

The money provides funding for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection budget, also known as Cal FIRE. No new services will be provided in exchange for the fee.
