Bankrupt San Bernardino slashes $26 million in spending

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.

In the midst of bankruptcy, the San Bernardino City Council voted to cut more than $26 million in spending and freeze debt payments Monday.

The plan also freezes vacancies in the San Bernardino Police Department and cuts the San Bernardino Fire Department's overtime budget by 35 percent.

The city of San Bernardino is currently facing a $45.8 million budget shortfall.

A closed door meeting to discuss the plan is scheduled for Monday and will be followed by a public meeting.
