Father admits to setting car with kids inside on fire, gets life in prison

LOS ANGELES

Attorneys say Dae Kwon Yun pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and admitted the special circumstances of arson murder and multiple murders in exchange to not proceed with a capital case.

On Sunday, April 2, 2006, Yun picked up his two children, 11-year-old Ashley and 10-year-old Alexander, for a day-long outing. After going to lunch and a movie, Yun drove his SUV to an industrial area in Los Angeles and put rags soaked in gasoline around the vehicle. The girl briefly escaped from the car before Yun pulled her back in. The boy stayed inside.

Yun then ignited the rags with a lighter, jumped out of the car and suffered burns to his legs. He called for medical assistance but allegedly told no one that his children were inside the burning car.

Yun was separated from his wife at the time of the murders. He was arrested almost two weeks later following an investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department's Robbery/Homicide Division.

A Los Angeles Superior Court judge sentenced Yun to two consecutive life-without-parole prison terms.
