Off-duty San Bernardino police chief tackles suspect

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.

Chief Rob Handy was in civilian clothes Wednesday when he was alerted to a suspicious man trying to sell power tools outside a restaurant.

When the man saw a patrol car nearby, he took off on foot. The chief ran him down and tackled him. During the pursuit, a gun fell out of the suspect's waistband.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a handgun.
