Investigators say the incident happened at about 3 a.m. at the corner of Sherman Way and Riverton Avenue. The crash caused a transformer to explode. That explosion started the blaze which heavily damaged the single-story, 7,500-square-foot building.
The fire was restricted to one business, called Wet Design, which makes parts for large fountains like the ones seen at The Grove and Americana malls.
At one point, more than 120 firefighters from 19 companies were on the scene. It took about an hour and a half to knock down the blaze.
"It was a difficult fire in that the mezzanine area was hard to get to, so we had to bring ladders into the inside of the structure, ladder that and actually put water down on top of the fire," said Assistant Chief Andy Fox with the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The explosion temporarily knocked out power to Bob Hope Airport. No injuries were reported.
