Knife-wielding man killed in West Whittier

WEST WHITTIER, Calif.

Authorities say the incident began with 911 calls about a man with a gun just after 4 p.m. Deputies were able to locate the suspect at the corner of Morrill Avenue and Holbrook Street.

The suspect was wielding a large knife and allegedly refused to put down his weapon. The man at one point reached toward his waistband, which was when a deputy opened fire. The suspect then fled the scene.

Deputies were able to relocate the suspect in the 6100 block of Holbrook Street. Again, authorities say the suspect refused to comply with the deputies' commands. The suspect allegedly moved toward the deputies aggressively, resulting in the deputies shooting the suspect.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, was declared dead at the scene. A large knife was recovered.

No deputies were hurt in the incident.
