California's unemployment rate stays at 9.8

LOS ANGELES

According to the Employment Development Department, 1.8 million Californians were unemployed in December.

While the rate was the same as in November, it is down from a year ago when it was over 11 percent.

State officials say the construction, information, educational and health services fields gained the most jobs between November and December.

Authorities say California's job growth is slightly faster than the national rate.
