Cool Kid 'fired up' to help out community

WEST HILLS, LOS ANGELES

Carlos Herrera wants to be a firefighter, and he's off to a great start. He volunteers at Los Angeles Fire Department Station 94 as part of the LAFD Cadet Program. It's all part of his goal to do more for his community.

"I've always wanted to help people. I've always been the kind that's not always reserved to just myself, helping myself out. I like to help everyone else out," said Carlos.

Whether going out on a fire call or paramedic call, Carlos knows what it takes to do the job right.

"You've got to get ready and get focused because there might be a life in danger too. It's not just wood burning up, it's life," said Carlos.

The firefighters at the station see a lot of potential in this cool kid.

"He's always the first one to volunteer to do work. He's a self-starter and a dynamic kid," said Paul Wingate, Carlos's Cadet Program advisor.

"I'd like to set an example to other teenagers or little kids, that it's a good thing to help out others," said Herrera.

Carlos Herrera is one Cool Kid on his way to a life and career in public service. And his neighborhood is a better place for it.
