OTRC: Oscars 2013: Jennifer Lawrence of 'Silver Linings Playbook' wins Best Leading Actress

Jennifer Lawrence has has won the 2013 Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in "Silver Linings Playbook," marking her first win and second nomination.

The winners were announced at a live ceremony that took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and aired live on ABC on Sunday, February 24. Lawrence beat Naomi Watts of "The Impossible," Jessica Chastain of "Zero Dark Thirty," Quvenhane Wallis, the 9-year-old star of "Beasts of the Southern Wild" and "Amour" actress" Emmanuelle Riva, who celebrated her 86th birthday on the day of the show.

"Thank you," she said, after stumbling on her way on stage. "You guys are just standing up because you feel bad that I fell and that's really embarrassing."

In her short acceptance speech, Lawrence also wished Riva a happy birthday.

In "Silver Linings Playbook," the actress plays a feisty woman named Tiffany who is mourning the death of her husband and is struggling to deal with her loss. She falls in love with main character Pat, played by Bradley Cooper. He is a former teacher and bipolar disorder patient who has been released from a mental institution and wants to reconnect with his ex-wife. Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver play his parents.

Lawrence is known for playing strong characters and is also known for her starring role as heroine Katniss in the "Hunger Games" films. She earned her first Oscar nomination as well as a Golden Globe nod for her performance in the 2010 film "Winter's Bone." Last month, Lawrence was also nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in "Silver Linings Playbook" but lost to Jessica Chastain of "Zero Dark Thirty."

"Probably the best moment of my career was when somebody came up to me and thanked me for making 'Silver Linings' because his family could finally understand him," she told OTRC.com several weeks ago. (Check out OTRC.com's interview with Jennifer Lawrence, who also discussed her family.)

Lawrence enlisted her brother's help to prepare for her role and also auditioned via Skype -- which marked the first time director David O. Russell had used the video call program to find actors for his projects.

"Silver Linings Playbook" was nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role for Cooper and Best Directing for Russell.
