Arrest in stabbing of elderly woman, dog in Riverside

Bishop resident Shannon Lyn Jones, 25, was taken into custody Tuesday following a short pursuit.

The violence broke at the Meadows Mobile Home Park Monday. Neighbors said a dog's barking and sudden painful cry for help woke up them at 4:30 a.m. Kim Lyman says Jones broke into his Riverside home, stabbed his dog Gunner and then went on to brutally attack an elderly neighbor.

The Lymans said they found a woman wearing a white hard hat and surgical gloves sitting on their couch. There was a knife by her feet. They said she was rambling on about people trying to kill her. After finally getting her out of their home, they realized their dog had been stabbed.

"When I went back in the house, he had Gunner, and we saw that he had been stabbed. We were scared and ticked off," said Suzy Lyman.

According to Riverside police, Jones targeted Donna Riggs' home first.

"I heard a bunch of noise and I woke my husband up and said, 'Someone's out there,'" Riggs said.

Riggs says when she and her husband walked outside, they found their shed door wide open with everything inside in disarray. They also noticed they were missing a hard hat.

"She left her purse there with all her ID and meds in there and a pillow and a pair of shoes," Riggs said.

Detectives said unit 19 was Jones' last stop, where she allegedly beat and stabbed an 80-year-old woman and stole her white 1995 Toyota Camry to make her getaway.

The female suspect, who was driving the victim's vehicle, was spotted in the Wildomar area around 2 a.m. Tuesday. She gave police chase before crashing and attempting to flee on foot. She was soon located and taken into custody.

Gunner is expected to make a full recovery. The 80-year-old woman remained hospitalized in stable but guarded condition.

Jones is facing charges of attempted murder, home invasion robbery, burglary, animal cruelty and vehicle theft. Anyone with information regarding the case was urged to contact Detective Jim Simons at (951) 353-7138.
