The Warner Brothers 3D action extravaganza, based on the "Jack and The Beanstalk" legend, pulled in about $28 million in its debut weekend to top the weekend box office. But the movie's box office victory was bittersweet since it had a reported budget of just under $200 million.
Jason Bateman-Melissa McCarthy's comedy "Identity Thief" came in at No. 2 with $9.7 million. The film has become the first film to cross the $100 million mark in 2013. But the numbers remained low all around this weekend among other new releases.
College romp "21 & Over" ranked in $9 million to open in third place while "The Last Exorcism Part II" and "Snitch" rounded out the top five.
