Newport fire pits issue postponed for May 3 meeting

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.

Members want to wait for feedback from South Coast Air Quality Management District officials. They're expected to weigh in at a May 3 meeting.

Newport Beach is seeking to get rid of 60 fire pits. Some homeowners have complained about the smoke, saying it could cause health problems.

Since the pits are located on state beaches, the city of Newport Beach needs the OK from the California Coastal Commission before removing them. That process has hit a few delays, with the commission saying the city has not offered clear evidence that wood smoke is harmful to people.
